York Sport Report: December 2023

York City F.C. December Report

Despite their continued struggle to properly escape the threat of relegation, last month’s discourse regarding York City F.C. has been dominated by an off-the-pitch proposal from the club’s majority owners.

Matt and Julie-Anne Uggla made a proposal to the Club’s Supporters Trust to increase their shareholding to 75% by buying a further 24% worth of B-shares from the Trust. A spokesperson for the Supporters Trust said that the proposal “has the potential to bring substantial benefits to our beloved club while further strengthening the Trust’s rights & protections.”

The Uggla’s bought former Chairman Glen Henderson’s shares back in June, and have since helped the club sign star striker Dipo Akinyemi in the summer and more recently former Braintree Town forward Will Davies, amongst a host of other players. It is expected that increasing the Uggla’s shareholding will modernise the club which will in turn help drag York further up the table and up the divisions in years to come. The Supporters Trust statement outlined “the proposed sale of the 24% stake will not alter the principle of rights held by the Supporters’ Trust in the club’s articles.” Since only B-shares rather than the more significant A-shares have been requested, a potential sale would not limit the Trust’s role in working as a representative voice for the community.

No changes will be made until after a Special General Meeting on the 30th of November, where Supporters will vote on the proposal.

On the pitch, the Minstermen now sit in 19th place in the table — an away victory over FC Fylde on the 11th of November was considered by many to be the strongest performant of manager Neal Ardley’s tenure. The gradual upturn in fortunes suggests that York should finish 2023 well on the path to safety and stability in the New Year.
