If you’re looking for a Halloween adventure packed with frights, screams and twisted fairy tales, Once Upon a Nightmare at Lotherton is definitely one to add to your spooky season bucket list!
Set within the beautiful grounds of Lotherton Hall, this walk-through scare experience transforms the gardens and woodland into a terrifying world where familiar fairy tales take a dark and sinister turn. As darkness falls, the atmosphere becomes increasingly eerie, with mist, flickering lanterns, creepy sound effects and shadowy figures lurking around every corner.
From the moment you enter, you’re transported into a world of nightmares. One of the highlights was encountering the terrifying Three Little Pigs, who came sniffing around our faces in the darkness! Things got even more intense when a full-sized wolf chased us through the grounds, adding plenty of excitement and panic to the experience.

The woodland paths were particularly atmospheric, with spooky characters hiding on benches and appearing when you least expected them. The scary clowns added another layer of terror, while the familiar storybook characters had been transformed into frightening versions of themselves. The combination of live scare actors, lighting and sound effects made every twist and turn unpredictable.
There were plenty of screams from the children, along with lots of running away from the characters! The actors did a brilliant job of creating suspense and delivering unexpected scares, making the whole experience feel immersive rather than simply walking through a Halloween attraction.
Although advertised as a family experience, it’s important to remember that this event isn’t suitable for children under nine or particularly timid youngsters. Some scenes are genuinely intense, so it’s worth considering how much your family enjoys being scared before booking.
Overall, Once Upon a Nightmare is a fantastic Halloween experience for families with older children, teenagers and adults who love a good fright. With its creepy woodland setting, twisted fairy tales and brilliant jump scares, it offers something much more exciting than your usual Halloween trail.
Our verdict: A thrilling, scream-filled adventure that brings nightmares to life! If you’re brave enough, Lotherton is well worth visiting this Halloween.
