As a self-proclaimed sugar fiend, I’m constantly on the lookout for good spots to get my latest pick-me-up. Over the years, I’ve managed to accrue a vast selection of cafes and patisseries to nip into on the way to work, but I’ve managed to narrow it down to just six of my favourite bakeries for you to try this autumn…
Aly’s Bakery and Pastry
Though known for their signature ‘San Sebastian’ cheesecake, Aly’s Bakery is far from having just one trick up their sleeve. I sampled some of their cinnamon cookies and was pleasantly surprised by the delicate fluffiness in a snack that could’ve easily been thick and heavy. Located close to York Hospital on Gillygate, chef Aly also offers menu design for local restaurants, along with workshops to share his culinary prowess with others.
Cosgriff and Sons
This sourdough bakery is located conveniently close to Clifford’s Tower, making it a great detour for a sightseeing trip. Despite being known for their bread, the pastries on offer at Cosgriff and Sons match the calibre of their savoury goods. Don’t worry, if your sweet tooth is as strong as mine, there’s plenty to choose from!
Hepni Bakery
Opened by India Luck in 2024, Hepni Bakery on Swinegate has continued to impress locals with their artistic creations. The vast range of colour and taste palettes in their viennoiserie makes this a great spot for an Instagram pic. For the athletically inclined, Hepni Bakery also offers a weekly run club – something I wish I’d had time to attend, given the delicious feast I sampled.
Little Blondie Bakehouse
I was sceptical of this pink paradise when it first popped up on Walmgate. To my eye, it looked like it could be the sort of trendy spot that focuses a little too much on the USP rather than good food, but I was quickly proven wrong. Little Blondie’s iconic ‘Crookie’ (Croissant and cookie) was enough to make my inner child squeal in glee, and their range of options has solidified them as a staple on a thoroughly competitive strip.
Bluebird Bakery
From a local phenom to a regional hotspot, Bluebird Bakery has seen well-deserved growth across their sites in recent years. This bakery is known for its organically made bread, which is noted for its absence of artificial preservatives and chemical raising agents. Their Acomb site (where their staple product is made) transforms into ‘Rise’ in the evenings, an intimate venue for live music, stand-up comedy, and other locally run events.
Flori Bakery
If Scandinavian pastries sound up your street, head down to Bishopthorpe Road to try Flori Bakery’s seasonal specials. The hot pastries at this local hotspot fly off the display quickly, so make sure you show up early if you want your pick of what’s on offer.
