Is sustainability an industry buzz word or does it mean anything in the real world?

By Matt Todd

It starts with longevity I think— we’ve been in business now for over 87-years and are still a partnership.

The active family partners of the company still work here full-time and take responsibility for making sure every sale and service meets the highest possible standards. When you shop with us today you can be certain that we will be here tomorrow and the day after to provide assistance and help should you need us.

We’re also responsible for the planet. We’ve been taking steps to reduce our footprint for nearly twenty years, by avoiding landfill and maximising the way we re-use the materials we collect and are given. A great introduction into our attitude towards recycling is how we deal with the expanded polystyrene that manufacturers use to enclose most of the products we sell. In order to prevent it ending up in landfill, I bought a screw compactor that turns the polystyrene into sausages of recyclable material which we send on for re-use. By doing this we have saved nearly 20 tonnes of polystyrene ending up buried in landfill over the last twenty years. Likewise, cardboard is also baled up and taken away to be recycled at our own cost, rather than letting it end up in landfill.

While we’re thinking about the planet, here’s another couple of initiatives we’re involved with. Herbert Todd’s have worked with other local businesses to provide hundreds of trees that have been planted along the Monks Cross Link road — we look forward to seeing them grow.

We have also purchased a delivery van that runs on pure electric so that we have less emissions and use less fossil fuels— give our guys a wave if you see them out and about.

Finally, we are all over the eco-credentials of the products we sell, from heat pump dryers to A-rated washers and fridge freezers, we know which of our machines will not only save the planet but save you money as well! With our “Black November” offers running into early December, there’s never been a better time to buy eco and buy local!

A very Merry Christmas to all Your Local Link readers, I really hope you are able to spend some quality time with your nearest and dearest this festive season.
