After ninety years in the electrical retail game, I’ve seen more fridges falter during a heatwave than I’ve had hot dinners. When temperatures climb in York, even the sturdiest models can start to feel the strain. The trick is knowing the signs early so you can step in before your milk turns.
The first giveaway is warm shelves. If the top shelf feels noticeably warmer than usual, your fridge may be working overtime. Another sign is longer cooling cycles – a constant hum that seems louder or more persistent. You might also spot condensation build‑up inside the fridge or around the door seal, a classic symptom of heat stress.
So, what can you do? Start with proper ventilation. With some models, it’s important to make sure there’s at least a couple of inches between the fridge and the wall, so warm air can escape. Next, check the door seals. A worn or loose seal lets warm air creep in, forcing the fridge to work harder. Finally, give the coils at the back a quick clean – dust acts like a winter coat, trapping heat where you don’t want it.
If the fridge still struggles, reduce the load. A jam-packed fridge restricts airflow, so reorganise or remove items to help it breathe. And if all else fails, it might be time to book a service. After nine decades in the trade, I can tell you: a small fix now saves a big bill later.
