Ben’s Book Corner: December 2023

Ben's book corner

By Ben Robinson

Christmas is my most treasured time of the year. From the decorations to the gifts— and all the celebrating in between— the festive season has all my favourite things. What more could you want after a long day of Christmas shopping, than to come home and pick up a glorious book to read.

I’ve put together a list of some festive books that will do just the trick, to warm you up on a chilly wintery day.

‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens

I couldn’t give you Christmas book recommendations and not include the most iconic Christmas book of all time! On one Christmas Eve, Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by three ghosts who warn him of the consequences of the suffering that he has caused. Will they manage to bring out the spirit of Christmas in him, or will he remain miserable forever? This is a classic story of how Christmas can bring out the joy in so many of us!

‘The Night Before Christmas’ by Clement C. Moore

This poetic tale describes the magical moment when a family are awoken by visit from Santa Claus, just in time to see him dropping off their gifts! This book is a little different to my usual recommendations, but if you can manage to pick up one of the beautifully illustrated pop-out versions it’ll make for perfect bedtime reading with your little ones this Christmas!

‘Hercule Poirot’s Christmas’ by Agatha Christie

Those of you who have read this column before will know I am a huge fan of Christie’s work. You won’t be surprised to hear that her Christmas Novel is no exception. A family gathers to reunite for Christmas, but when the host is found murdered in a private room, a mystery begins to unravel. This story of romance, intrigue, festivities, and darkness will keep you on the edge of your seat this December.
