Travel expert: Greek getaways

By Kerry Lakey of Savannah Travel

Greece is an ever-popular travel destination offering something for everyone from families to solos and couples, to those with a keen interest in Greek mythology…

Whether you choose to explore the mainland or head to the islands, each offers something a little different, be it scenery or local menu specialities. This month we are taking a look at some of our favourite Greek destinations.

Crete

— the largest and one of the southernmost islands, Crete is rich in history and vibrant in culture.

Here are some of our must-see recommendations when visiting Crete.

1. The Minoan Palace of Knossos: Explore the ancient ruins of the Minoan civilisation at Knossos. The archaeological site of Knossos is thought to have been settled around 7000BC, earning it the accolade of ‘Europe’s oldest city’.

2. Samaria Gorge: Hike through one of Europe’s longest and most spectacular gorges, located in the White Mountains of Crete. The trail takes you through breath-taking scenery, including towering cliffs and lush vegetation.

3. Hire a car or take the local bus to the town of Rethymnon. Stroll through the atmospheric streets of the Old Town, where you’ll find well-preserved Venetian and Ottoman architecture, charming cafes, and artisan shops.

Rhodes

— the largest of the Dodecanese islands boasts a rich history, stunning beaches, and charming villages.

Some of our top recommendations for your trip to Rhodes include:

1. Rhodes Old Town: Explore the medieval town of Rhodes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its narrow cobblestone streets, ancient walls, and impressive architecture, including the Palace
of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes.

2. Lindos: Visit the picturesque village of Lindos, known for its whitewashed buildings, Acropolis, and beautiful beaches. Don’t miss the opportunity to climb up to the Acropolis for breathtaking views.

3. Symi:Take a day trip over to the nearby island of Symi. Hailed as one of Greece’s prettiest islands, Symi is characterised by pastel-coloured town houses and a quaint harbour full of wooden fishing boats. You may choose to split your stay with some time on Symi before heading back to end your stay in Rhodes.

Mykonos

—Located in the Cyclades, joined by some stunning islands of Greece including Naxos, Paros, Syros, Milos and Santorini, Mykonos is known as the island of wind and is famous for its windmills.

Mykonos Town itself has become known as ‘Designer Greece’ with many luxury properties surrounding the capital; the centre of the town itself has its famous whitewash Cycladic architecture. Head to the waterfront area affectionally known as ‘Little Venice’ or wander the streets filled with upmarket boutiques, bars & restaurants. If you are looking for a busier holiday, Mykonos Town, with its plethora of bars, clubs, and beach parties that keep the party going well into the early hours of the morning, is definitely one to consider. From sophisticated cocktail lounges to lively beach bars, there’s something for every taste.

Whether you’re searching for a relaxing beach break, hoping to discover your adventurous side on an island-hopping trip, or if you are looking to delve deeper into Greek history and culture, Greece & her islands have something for everyone.
