The Grand Opera House is a historical gem in York, and its a theatre that’s been churning out some fantastic shows over the decades. Most recently, the smash hit West End show, Heathers The Musical is running this month, and we hear, from our Sales Territory Manager, Mim who was lucky enough to see the show:
Walking into the theatre I wasn’t sure what to expect having never seen the official movie myself, but looking at the packed theatre full of excited fans with fantastic Heather costumes and hair scrunchies, I knew I was in for a treat.
As the show begins, we’re transported into the school halls of Westerberg High, a relatable scene as we’re taken to the groups you might have had back in your own youth. It’s then that we’re introduced to The Heathers, the popular ‘rulers’ of the school who other students wish they were, in order to make their own school lives easier.
Then comes in Veronica Sawyer (played by Jenna Innes) a clever student who is fantastic at forging hall passes which she uses as a way to get into the good books of the ever popular Heathers. Popularity isn’t its all cracked up to be, however, as a bad boy, JD sweeps Veronica off her feet. Jacob Fowler, who plays JD, performed his role extremely convincingly, revealing a rather dark side, in his attempt to improve life for Veronica at school. A ‘Mean Girls’ style plot then starts to turn very dark as JD and Veronica attempt the murder of the main Heather.
There is a lot of dark humour in this show and it covers a lot of issues young teenagers go through, so I can see why they would have such a massive teenage fan base.
The vocals throughout where flawless, in particular ‘The Candy Store’ by The Heathers and ‘Shine a Light’ by Ms Fleming and the students were a few of my favourites. Having said that, its really hard to pick as all of the songs were sung amazingly! The entire cast and impressive choreography just shows the top talent that this show has on offer.
Just observing the crowds reaction to the music and the standing ovation at the end lifted the whole atmosphere of the show. This is one show that I would definitely recommend people to go and watch – you wont be disappointed!
