York Minster’s bellringers emerged victorious from the National 12-Bell Striking Contest Final this summer, ‘ringing in’ the remarkable centenary of the building’s famous twelve bells with a bang!
The Minster bellringers were one of nine finalist teams taking part in the competition, with each set of ringers being allocated a 30-minute slot to perform a practice piece and a test piece, the latter being in the Stedman Clinques method, which is widely regarded as one of the trickiest and most demanding forms of change ringing.
This year’s final saw the introduction of the first-ever all-female judging panel, and marked the contest’s first return to York since 1999, when local ringers last secured victory on home soil. Our homegrown ringers beat bands from Bristol and Birmingham, the most successful in the competition’s history, to pip the top spot!
Band Leader, Ed Mack, said: “I am incredibly proud of the York team. Success in this contest comes from dedication, hard work and teamwork over many months. To win on our own bells during their centenary year, in front of so many friends from across the ringing community, makes the achievement even more special.”
