York lecturer shortlisted for The Wolfson History Prize 2026

Sam Wetherell, a local author and Senior Lecturer at the University of York, has been shortlisted for this year’s Wolfson History Prize, the most valuable history writing prize in the UK.

Liverpool: A Story of Britain offers an engaging and immersive journey through the complex history of Liverpool, from its post-WWII recovery to the Toxteth riots. In praise of the book, the Wolfson History Prize judges said: “Humane, distressing, and yet curiously optimistic, Wetherell deftly uses Liverpool as the lens through which to rethink Britain’s post-industrial decline.”

Liverpool: A Story of Britain has been shortlisted with five other books, including Sadiah Qureshi’s Vanished: An Unnatural History of Extinction and Lyndal Roper’s Summer of Fire and Blood: The German Peasants’ War. David Cannadine, Chair of the Wolfson History Prize judges, said: “These remarkable six books remind us of the power of history writing, not just to uncover the past but to bring new perspectives and nuance to our understanding of the present.”

If crowned the winner, Wetherell will receive a £50,000 prize – good luck, Sam!
