WE TRIED: THULA PILATES

By Sophie Lancaster

Following the opening of the much-anticipated new Pilates studio recently opened at Clifton Moor, Thula Pilates, I chucked on my leggings and headed down to try out a reformer Pilates class…

Sam, the instructor, was really welcoming and friendly. Having never previously used a reformer machine, it looked quite daunting, but luckily, Sam was at hand to talk me through the machine, show me the ropes, and teach me how to use it before the session got going.

We started by going through some basic techniques and breathing methods, before moving into a full-body routine, which serves as great cross-training to complement other sports – as a keen runner, I was interested to see how the session could help me out. Throughout the class, we worked through different movements which used the resistance of the reformer machine to target different areas and muscles of the body.

Reformer Pilates focuses on building strength, flexibility and core stability through low-impact, controlled movements. In a nutshell, it’s all about concentrating on positioning, control and technique. Sam offers both mat and reformer Pilates classes, running group sessions as well as private one-to-one coaching. As a BASI-approved instructor, Sam is truly passionate about sharing her wealth of knowledge and helping you to feel your best using the transformative power of exercise.

As a runner myself, I learnt how Pilates can help to support my performance. Most notably, it helps to build strength, particularly in the core muscles, whilst also improving hip mobility and correcting muscle imbalances to prevent injuries. Pilates is helpful because it works muscles that you might not usually focus on, especially whilst running, competing in team sports, or casually exercising. Each movement was clearly explained, and Sam also pointed out that she’s able to adapt specific exercises for those working with a pre-existing injury.

Thula Pilates offers a range of different classes to cater for all abilities, from beginner sessions in both mat and reformer Pilates through to intermediate and advanced classes, so you can always find something that works best for you and your individual level of experience. Having never tried reformer Pilates before, I found that the beginner session offered the perfect opportunity to learn the basics and get to grips with the equipment.

The studio itself was a calm, bright and welcoming space, perfect for Pilates! I really enjoyed the class and came away feeling refreshed, motivated and like I’d had a really good workout.
