Cancer research has always been at the heart of York Against Cancer’s mission, and they have been supporting scientists at the University of York since their earliest days. Back in 1992, when York Against Cancer was only five years old, they opened the Jack Birch Unit, where they’ve done groundbreaking research into understanding the causes, prevention and treatment of bladder cancer ever since. Cancers of that type receive relatively little research attention despite being one of the ten most common adult cancers.
Recently, the team has made some incredible discoveries in how cancers may go undetected by the body, once detected bladder cancer has an 80% survival rate. Making the research done at the unit beyond vital to the York community, where bladder cancer is above the national average.
