Veteran carer Sharron Smith is rewarded with the ultimate promotion.

Following a 23 year career that began as a temporary three-month contract, Sharron Smith was given the ultimate promotion in April— appointed as the CEO of York Carers Centre. When she first started, Sharron may have never imagined rising so high up in the charity, but those who have witnessed her career up close know York Carers Centre could do no better. One such person is Rosmarie Temple from the Chair of Trustees who commented: “Sharron brings a wealth of experience to the role, in both the ‘Carers field’ and ‘charity sector.”

Sharron’s heavy involvement in the development of the Young Carers service put the York Centre on the map. Unlike others at the time, the service offered direct support to young people aged between 5 and 18 who were helping to look after someone at home, Sharron made the York centre one of the first in the country to do so.

Sharron responded graciously to the promotion: “I am truly honoured to have this role and I’d like to thank the Trustees, staff team and carers for their support. I hope to build on this and continue to ensure the centre maintains its positive reputation in the city. I am very proud to be part of such a wonderful organisation which is genuinely passionate about supporting carers and really does keep carers at the forefront of everything they do.”

Her promotion is more than deserving and demonstrates York Care Centre’s commitment to its core principles as her central role in caring for her community has not gone unnoticed.
