Two beloved local watering holes, The Lord Nelson in Nether Poppleton and the now-closed Victoria Vaults on Nunnery Lane, have been put forward for protected status due to their perceived value to the community.
Said to have been built in the 17th century, and originally named The Cross Keys, The Lord Nelson was given its current title after the Battle of Trafalgar (1805), and was used as a hospital site to treat wounded parties during the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644. Nestled on Main Street in the heart of the village, The Lord Nelson has been described as a heritage asset, with Nether Poppleton Parish Council applying for the site to be designated as an Asset of Community Value by City of York Council, a status last achieved in 2019.
The Victoria Vaults, which previously functioned as a pub and grassroots music venue before closing in late 2024, has also been put forward as a valuable community asset, with members of Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) presenting the application to City of York Council.
This month, CAMRA’s efforts resulted in The Victoria Vaults being designated as an asset of community value (ACV)!
