THEATRE REVIEW: Madagascar the Musical @ York Theatre Royal

Madagascar the Musical - Matt Terry and cast

This production of Madagascar the Musical at York Theatre Royal captures the imagination of both kids and grown ups in one fell hoof.

It’s been 13 years since Madagascar burst onto our screens telling the simple tale of lovable animals setting out for the wild from New York Central Park Zoo.

A nimble and energetic approach from the theatre company: Selladoor, bridges the gap between animation and reality with a skilful blend of puppetry, dancing and adorable acting.

Before the show, a monkey puppet informs audience members that poo will be flung if anyone is caught with their phone out. This immediately appalls a young audience member who takes to heckling in order to express her disgust. Kids engaged? Check.

There’s no time wasted as the cast bound across the bright and beautiful set and straight into song. Tight choreography and flamboyant costumes are brought to life with intricate lighting, that ramps up to concert levels for songs.  The leg muscle of a zebra does look weird on a human man, though.

The first half does its job, but it’s the second half that really sparkles. The minute King Julien (Jo Parsons) appears in the Madagascan jungle, the belly laughs come thick and fast. His eccentric performance, including thumping around on his knees with a sprinkling of dabs, catches everyone right in the giggles.

Penguins in Madagascar the Musical

Puppetry plays a big part in recreating the magic of Madagascar and the ensemble are masters at creating an authentic penguin waddle without detracting from the action.

X Factor 2016 winner, Matt Terry takes on lead role as Alex the Lion with complete enthusiasm and it’s infectious. He throws out falsetto vocals we certainly didn’t see on the popular TV competition. Those theatrical roots serve him well.

Gloria, played by Tummika Ramsay is just as sassy and fabulous as her animated counterpart and her vocals are gorgeous, too.

Flamboyant and fun: This family first production is a barrel of laughs for kids and adults alike.

It runs from today until 2nd March at York Theatre Royal.
