‘The UK’s most prolific touring company’ bring their latest production to Wilberfoss

Having spent the last 51 years bringing over 68 original shows across England, Mikron Theatre Company are bringing their latest play — Twitchers — to our corner of Yorkshire. It’s a fascinating play that works hard to remind its’ audience how important organisations like the RSPB are, with their rich history of campaigning and protest, in the ever-changing world of the twenty-first century.

The production arrives in Wilberfoss on Tuesday the 12th of September and should make for an unmissable couple hours of action — packed to the brim with hilarious dialogue and height after height of Mikron’s own live original music. Unfortunately Willberfoss’ landlocked location has meant that the cast will be arriving by road, usually however the Mikron Theatre Company travel on their 86 year old narrowboat, Tyseley. She has been ferrying the cast to shows for 44 years and is just one of the reasons that make Mikron one of the most versatile storytellers in the world. Inspired by this unusual history, this production of Twitchers is perhaps the most unique way you could spend a Tuesday afternoon this month.

The story follows Jess, the Reserve Warden of Shrikewing nature reserve, as she prepares for the important visit of the RSPB to her park. In the face of mounting pressure from pollution, vandals and an overzealous mayor — she starts to feel that protecting birds from human interference might just be impossible.

Can Jess take inspiration from the RSPB’s tenacious female founders and draw on its history of campaigning to save them?

Nest(le) down with Mikron in this flight through birdwatching history, feathered with birdsong and laughter.

“Our feathered friends are the real stars of the show…”

Playwright Poppy Hollman said:

“It’s a joy to write for Mikron and I’m delighted to be part of their 51st year of touring.”

“Twitchers’ is about the RSPB, Europe’s largest conservation charity, and their struggles to protect birds and wildlife since 1889. The play offers a fun swoop into the colourful world of birds and birdwatching. Our feathered friends are the real stars of the show; you’ll see them flirting, bickering and making their own indelible impression on the plot.”
