The Old Liquor Store: Enjoy delicious dining in York this December

Part of the former Terry’s chocolate factory on Bishopthorpe Road has been transformed into a delicious Italian-inspired restaurant.

The Old Liquor Store is an Italian-influenced restaurant situated at the epicentre of York’s culinary history — inside the old Terry’s Chocolate Works, the factory that employed hundreds of people to produce countless chocolate bars across the most part of the 20th Century. Now under the directorship of Ben Williams the restaurant boasts one of the city’s very best Sunday Lunch offerings, and is the place to be for all York-based foodies this December. Starting from November the 30th and running until the very last day of December, The Old Liquor Store are hosting three unmissable events.

Upcoming Events at The Old Liquor Store

There’s still time to book tickets for next Thursday’s South American extravaganza. A Taste of Argentina at 7pm on the 30th of November is the perfect way to end the month in delicious style. It’s an introduction to Argentine cuisine where you’ll taste everything from choripán (a traditional Argentine chorizo sandwich) to dulce de leche (a popular Latin American cream-based confectionary)— whilst South American wine importer Phil, from Ucopia wines, guides you through 5 of the countries finest wines.

Then there’s two more unmissable dining events in December. On both Christmas and New Year’s Eve The Old Liquor Store are offering delicious set menu-dining— both of which are to be accompanied by piano music from York’s own jazz aficionado Karl Mullen. On the 24th  attendees will start Christmas festivities early with this luxury feast, including a heather honey glazed duck breast and their signature Terry-misu dessert. Then on the 31st, delve into another 6-course set menu starring seared king scallops and perfectly tailored cocktails.

Sunday Lunch Review

The first thing that’s immediately evident about The Old Liquor Store is the depth of its history. From the moment we were led to our table, in the historic steps and ancient tiles— that have been restored (by the star of BBC1’s Interior Design Masters Banjo Beale no less!) but not replaced since the 1920s —to the photos on the surrounding walls that depict stories of the factory workers and their families from across the last century, all the way up to a menu that respectfully indulges in the very best flavours from our city’s legacy.

While items like Gorgonzola Dolce, Radicchio and fresh pear probably aren’t the first things that come to mind when you imagine Sunday Lunch traditions, what their inclusion on the menu do make clear is that a roast from The Old Liquor Store is far from the ordinary.

We ordered three courses in the end (for only £36!) starting with the Bresaola Punta D’anca gorgonzola dolce radicchio, with fresh pear and toasted Hazelnuts, a shaved pear and cheese salad. A perfect combination of sweet, rich and light flavours that perfectly introduced our taste buds in time for the luxurious main course to come. A roast sirloin of Yorkshire reared beef, accompanied with Yorkshire pudding, barolo and veal bone gravy, cauliflower cheese and roasted carrots. The plate is a melting pot of flavour — where the beef is the obvious star event but the gravy deserves equal plaudits for how it ties everything together.

Finally we made our way to dessert. The Terry’s Chocolate Sundae was an obvious choice. The ice cream is adorned with chunks of brownies and candied orange cubes — a faultless pair of flavours to complete the perfect sundae.

Whether you look forward to an unmissable few weeks of festivity by indulging in the luxury Sunday Lunch or taking things even further at one of the upcoming events, The Old Liquor Store is the place to be this December in York.
