A York printmaker and illustrator specialising in original linocut prints celebrates a decade of success in self-employment this year.
Having lived and worked in York for 20 years, Michelle Hughes set up shop as a self-employed person in 2016, after experiencing a fourth redundancy. Speaking on taking the leap into self-employment, Michelle said: “Leaving a 25-year career in design to become self-employed was a leap into the unknown. Celebrating ten years feels incredibly rewarding. What started with a few original linocut prints and local workshops has grown into an international business, with customers buying my work and taking my online courses from around the world. This year also saw the publication of my first book, Printing Birds and Wildlife in Linocut, by The Crowood Press, making the anniversary even more special.”
Having previously worked with big-name brands including George Home at Asda, Disney Home Europe, and The Arcadia Group, Michelle said: “Being self-employed has allowed me to steer my own ship and build a business around the things I love. I’ve been able to draw on my background in design, retail, and product development while continually learning new skills, from marketing and website design to photography, filming and editing.”
