REVIEW: The Adventures of Old Granny Goose

Me Babbies, Me Bairns!

York’s legendary Berwick Kaler is back on stage at the Grand Opera House, bringing some festive cheer (and lots of laughs), in this year’s pantomime, The Adventures of Old Granny Goose.

This year, Berwick plays the role of Mrs. Plum Duff, a caring mother of two children, Cissy (Eastenders star, Suzy Cooper) and Jessie (Martin Barrass). This enthusiastic twin duo bring home to Acomb village, a goose disguised as Clifford the Big Red Dog whose true identity is unmasked when it begins laying valuable golden eggs – much desired by this year’s baddy, Lucifer (David Leonard).

There was an energetic start to the show when the curtains rose, with plenty of lights, disco balls, and a bright Superman suit, whilst the cast sang their opening number, “We are the Panto Heroes”. The show was bursting with brightly coloured costumes and catchy songs such as ‘Right Hand Man’. At one point, we even got to see Berwick in a bright pink glittery dress with his rendition of Aqua’s famous ‘Barbie Girl’ number – swinging around his handbag on stage (until its handle broke and it took to the air… much to the crowd’s amusement!) Not forgetting the songs that were supported by a talented dance team, which included kids from York Stage School who stole the hearts of the audience.

David Leonard certainly played the notorious Lucifer with charisma and venom. One of the scenes that really stood out for me was his failed attempt to steal the fairy, Cissy, as his wife. Her lover, Brum (played by A.J. Powell), aware of the cruel baddy’s plan, outsmarts Lucifer by acting as a decoy.

The team pulled off crafty tricks such as floating objects, disappearing furniture, and Berwick flying like Peter Pan! And of course, no panto would be complete without the nostalgic, “It’s behind you” scenes and resounding “oh yes it is” replies.

This is certainly a show for all the family, and what better way to enjoy the show than in the newly refurbished venue in the heart of York’s city centre!?

The Adventure of Old Granny Goose is set to take the stage until Sunday 8th January. Book your tickets here: https://www.atgtickets.com/shows/old-granny-goose/grand-opera-house-york/
