A landmark installation from acclaimed multimedia artist Es Devlin is now open to visitors! Created to mark the National Year of Reading and celebrate the tercentenary year of Sir John Vanbrugh, the visionary architect behind Castle Howard, one of the best-loved country houses in North Yorkshire and the most famous in Britain, Library of the Four Winds is a luminous sculpture artwork currently available to view and explore in and around the iconic venue’s famous Temple of the Four Winds.
Award-winning artist Es Devlin, whose renowned works in set and stage design include the 2022 Super Bowl Halftime Show, Adele’s Griffith Observatory performance, and West End productions of Chimerica, The Lehman Trilogy, and Hamlet, said: “It’s a very special privilege to be invited to make a new work within Vanbrugh’s exquisite Temple of the Four Winds at Castle Howard. The Library of the Four Winds is a luminous oval revolving bookshelf – reflected to double height through a mirrored base. It draws on Vanbrugh’s dedication to literature, architecture and political activism within his final architectural masterpiece.”
Library of the Four Winds will be available to visit until 27th September, and accessible on 7 August and 4 September as part of the Friday Lates programme.
