A new business specialising in handmade guitar amplifiers has now set up shop just a stone’s throw from York. Founded by Drew Colson, Colson of York builds all of its amps individually in-house, using locally sourced hardwoods.
Each lovingly crafted amp can involve more than 30 hours of hands-on work, from cutting, sanding, setting and soldering to finishing, testing and refining. Speaking on the motivation for establishing his new business, Drew said: “I’ve spent years chasing that feeling you get when an amplifier really responds. As a player, I wanted something that worked naturally with pedals, felt alive under my fingers and had a real presence in the room. Colson of York brings together guitars, analogue sound, natural materials, science, design and precision, all things that I’m interested in.”
