Get ready for York Disability Week 2023

To build up to the UN’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities, York Disability Week have put together a packed week of events from November 25th to December 3rd. With 30 to choose from including ice skating at the Designer Outlet, an inclusive poetry evening as well as dementia-friendly film screenings and accessible rugby taster sessions—  there’s something for everyone to get excited about. To make things even better, almost all of them are free!

Beyond the fun and entertainment there will also be a series of talks and discussions with a more educational focus. The charity plan on flipping conventional discourse on its head — rather than teaching individuals with disabilities how to interact with others, they will be teaching those without disabilities how to interact— to help all of York’s community feel more welcoming and inclusive.

These talks will inform on the challenges of working when living with chronic illness, as well as the experiences of families with disabled children, growing up and then managing the adult world of dating and much more. There’s also the unique opportunity to hear from local disability activist Flick Williams about her route to activism.

This year’s events are being held virtually or in outer areas of the city to make them more accessible to a wider range of people. However, this should be the last year that events are limited in this way, as the Council decided in October to allow blue badge holders to park on city centre streets again.

Everyone who attends at any point during the week will find themselves better informed about what’s available in York for people living with disabilities.
