Care Homes vs Home Care: Making the right choice for your loved ones

By Ed Gill, Director of Radfield Home Care.

Choosing between care homes and home care services is a crucial decision when considering older relatives. Each has its own benefits and considerations.

Care Homes

Care homes offer a communal living environment with around-the-clock support from trained staff. Residents benefit from structured routines, organised activities, and social interaction opportunities. However, the support received can be less personalised than that of a one-to-one home care service.

Home Care Services

Home care allows your loved ones to remain in their own homes while receiving much of the same support as in a care home – from companionship to personal care, to medication assistance. Care Professionals provide one-on-one support that ranges from as little as 60 minutes a week, up to 24-hour care, all tailored to the individual’s needs and preferences. It promotes independence by maintaining familiar surroundings.

Personalised Care

Both care homes and home care services offer support with the activities of daily living, medication management, specialised care for conditions like dementia, as well as palliative support. Home care plans are flexible, allowing for adjustments as needs change over time.

Cost

Care homes typically involve higher costs, including accommodation, meals, and care services. Home care services, on the other hand, are more affordable since clients pay only for the hours of care they receive.

Family Involvement

While care homes provide peace of mind with around-the-clock supervision and visiting hours for family members, home care services enable active family involvement in care planning and emotional support, where desired, while still maintaining a close relationship.

In conclusion, the decision between care homes and home care services depends on factors such as care needs, preferences, financial resources, and family support. It’s essential for families to thoroughly explore both options, consider the pros and cons, and make a decision that best meets the needs of their ageing loved ones. Consulting with healthcare professionals and utilising available resources can facilitate this important decision-making process.
