Anything but a Shambles – Christmas Shopping Sorted

Here at Your Local Link, we are completely stumped for what to buy our nearest and dearest for Christmas and, with the biggest day of the year just around the corner, we can’t even find time to plan. If this is ringing bells with you lovely readers then fear not, because we have devised a simple and easy way of Christmas shopping in York where you will find something for everyone, within a budget and all on one street. Not to mention the many independent retailers you’d be supporting! With the Shambles being so small, most of the resident shops tend to be independent businesses and give the street a very different feel to the other high street shops around the city.

Roly’s Fudge Pantry – 2 Shambles

Calling all fudge lovers! If you haven’t visited Roly’s on the Shambles then you seriously should. With a new seasonal pumpkin spice flavoured fudge, and collaborations with the Shambles Tavern and the York Gin company, do you need any more reasons to try their deliciously traditional fudge? With beautifully packaged gift boxes, and their new long-awaited dairy-free fudge, there is something for every fudge lover at Roly’s.

Take One Gifts – 3 Shambles

Take One is the home of geek culture down the Shambles. If three Harry Potter shops weren’t enough, then Take One have got even more merchandise for you, along with other popular geek favourites. Pop Vinyl figures, t-shirts, posters and more are on sale here at the North end of the Shambles so for film and TV lovers, this is the perfect place to find a gift.

Pinder & Scott – 6 Shambles

This artisan bakery at number six sells a range of fantastic, freshly made bread alongside their own tea, coffee and preserves. This is a great place to find items for a home-made hamper, or just to re-stock your own kitchen! On Sunday and Monday, Pinder & Scott welcome Deborah’s Bakes, selling fresh cakes, homemade brownies and cupcakes. Products can be easily gift wrapped to make a delicious Christmas present.

Monk Bar Chocolatiers – 7 Shambles

Hebden Tea Company – 21 Shambles

Hebden Tea Company specialises in quality teas from around the world, offering a large variety of products. Born in Hebden Bridge, the store relocated in 2011 to York Shambles where they continue to maintain their independent spirit. The team pride themselves in the sourcing of their tea from small grassroots suppliers who are just as enthusiastic about tea as they are. The Home of Harry Potter

If you’re shopping for Harry Potter fans, or just want to treat yourself to some wizarding merchandise, there’s no better place to look than The Shambles. The original ‘Harry Potter shop’, The Shop That Must Not Be Named, still remains at 30 Shambles, along with The Boy Wizard at 23 and World of Wizardry at 27. Now stocking merchandise from both Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts, you’ll find some fantastic stocking fillers and products to spoil your loved ones this Christmas. Thirsty after that real-life Diagon Alley experience? Try The Potions Cauldron at 9 ¾ Shambles. If you’ve ever heard of the York Cat Trail, this is where it originates. This quaint jewellery shop in the heart of The Shambles is run by a friendly and welcoming team, and after a lot of renovation, the shop still keeps a touch of 15th century aesthetic. The Little Shambles Jewellers is a proud Fairtrade retailer, stocking a range of products including designer jewellery from Alex Monroe and Sheila Fleet. With a workshop upstairs, they also offer repairs and alterations, as well as bespoke designs for that perfect gift.

Essence of Peru – 43 Shambles

This quirky addition to the Shambles is the ideal place to find 

something unique for little ones. Essence of Peru are specialists in wonderful ethically produced clothing, gifts and homewares from Peru. The vibrant children’s cardigans are their signature product, and their Christmas stock is now available to add to your decorations at home.

Ye Old Shambles Tavern – 44 Shambles

Situated on the site of a former butcher shop, Shambles Tavern serves up a traditional pub menu, hot drinks and Yorkshire beers and ciders. Pop in for a drink or some grub, and on your way out, why not purchase a gift box of beers, ciders or exclusive Christmas liqueur? Perfect for those who love a tipple at Christmas!

Events in York

You can find your way onto The Shambles very easily. Turn off from the Pavement near Marks and Spencer at the south end and walk up it, or if you find yourself in The Shambles market you can cut through a snickelway, and finally if you’re coming from Kings Square simply head between York’s Chocolate Story and The Duke of York pub and you’ll find yourself at the north end.
