A Free Wiggy Centenary Celebration: 100 Years of Wigginton Recreation Hall

This month, local families are invited to celebrate the 100th anniversary of a much-loved York institution, Wigginton Recreation Hall!

First opened in 1926, the hall originally shared wooden buildings with St Nicholas Church, which were unfortunately lost to a fire in 1969. Since its refurbishment and reopening in 1970, the hall has provided a crucial community hub for the people of Wiggy and the wider York area, and continues to host a wide variety of family-friendly clubs and groups, including dance groups, DIY Groups, baby groups, senior citizen groups, fitness and wellbeing groups, mental health and exercise groups, and many more – the local Women’s Institute has been active in the hall since its first opening, while the Wednesday Club has been holding meetings at the venue for 80 years.

To celebrate the landmark centenary of Wigginton Recreation Hall, its Trustees and Management Committee is holding a FREE event for all ages on Saturday, 20th June, from 10.00am to 2.00pm. Our readers and their families are invited to explore the wide range of activities carried out in the hall and the village, have a chinwag with the hall’s active groups (you’re also welcome to join a club yourself, if you’re interested), enjoy free refreshments courtesy of Wiggy Women’s Institute ladies, and buy a ticket to enter a special super raffle. Various Emergency Services Organisations will be in attendance, and the hall will be raising funds for The Firefighters Charity. Along with other guests, we’ll also see the Civic Party and City of York Lord Mayor making an appearance!
