Employment readiness training launched for the deaf and hard of hearing

A free, six-month employment readiness training programme has now been launched for deaf and hard of hearing adults living in York.

Delivered by York-based Living 4 Moments with support from the Trailblazer Community Grant, the new Sensory Pathway Pilot aims to provide free, tailored employment support, complete with BSL interpreters to ensure accessibility.

The scheme has been masterminded by Rachel Barber, a former care home manager who lost her hearing overnight; “What followed was two years of guesswork, exhaustion, and a confidence I didn’t get back, even after a cochlear implant restored some sound”, she said. “What I actually needed didn’t exist: targeted coaching, peer support from people who understood, and practical (not just technical) guidance on making assistive tech work in real life.”

To qualify for inclusion in the Sensory Pathway Pilot, you must currently live in York, be aged either 18-25 or 50-64, and be deaf or hard of hearing; you’ll also need to be currently unemployed and looking to move towards employment, training, or other work-related training opportunities.

Could this be you? If so, start your Sensory Pathway Pilot journey today!
