First established in 1999, Mainstay is a York-based charity and specialist organisation committed to supporting local people with a broad range of mental health concerns.
Mainstay estimates that around one in four of us suffer from mental ill health, ranging from anxiety and work-related stress to severe depression or psychosis, requiring intensive health professional support. According to data examined in City of York Council’s One City for All 2023 to 2027 plan, 18.9% of 18-64-year-olds are currently predicted to have a mental health problem.
Living with poor mental ill health can lead to a loss of purpose and direction, creating obstacles in everyday lives and relationships that can seem almost insurmountable. It’s also recognised that the relationship between poverty and poor mental health can be cumulative, with increased poverty levels leading to mental health issues and higher levels of social and financial exclusion, and vice versa. Through its support and advocacy services, Mainstay strives to help those who may be feeling lost to visualise their future, take stock of available opportunities, and begin the journey towards better mental health, without the barriers. Mainstay takes a person-centred approach, placing each individual at the heart of their own recovery journey. Combining aspects of education and social care with meaningful practical support, Mainstay works tirelessly to help people in need in our community, whatever mental health problems they may be living with. Mainstay’s services currently include:
Counselling – The Mainstay team includes both male and female counsellors across a range of ages, who deliver counselling with a person-centred approach. Mainstay offers counselling in blocks of 6 sessions, which conclude with a review and discussion about further pathways or suitable services, tailored to each individual. This is free of charge, although those who use the service are invited to make a small voluntary contribution to go towards the cost of room hire. Referrals are welcome.
Steps Mentoring – Mainstay also runs a community-based support programme for local people who suffer from mental ill health, Steps Mentoring. This bespoke service is aimed at enabling individuals in need to build skills and self-esteem, gain confidence, and take tangible steps towards achieving their personal goals. Previous programme enrolees have gone on to secure part-time employment, volunteer roles, and places in college courses. Self-referrals or professional referrals are welcome.
Drop In – Mainstay runs regular drop-in sessions from the Priory Street Centre in York, which offer local people the chance to meet, mingle, engage with their community, and enjoy social activities together.
Mainstay Academy – Mainstay Academy offers a comprehensive programme of vocational & academic short-courses and workshops, delivered both online and in person, which encourage personal development and offer volunteering and career guidance.
