“I love colour and using it in my work – it’s essential to artists,” says Colin Black whose vision, and livelihood as an artist, were seriously threatened by a cataract.
Fortunately Optegra eye clinic—the latest in a network of specialist eye hospitals and clinics across the UK —has opened on the York Business Park.
The York branch— much like all Optegra eye hospitals— is supported by specialist optometrists and NHS trained surgeons and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Far from the long waiting lists many have grown used to in NHS opticians and hospitals, Colin received his date for consultation within just days and was treated within weeks.
Colin, 68, said, “I think my cataract has deteriorated quite quickly as it was only briefly mentioned at my previous check-up a year ago. I assumed I would be added to a long waiting list for cataract surgery, so when my optometrist referred me for NHS treatment at the new Optegra clinic in York I jumped at the chance. The clinic is brand new, so professional and welcoming, it felt very calm.”
Cataract patients can be referred by their optician or GP to Optegra Eye Clinic York, all they need do is ask. Even if they are already on a waiting list, they have the right to choose where they are treated, so can request a referral to Optegra where they’re guaranteed a treatment within six weeks.
Clinic manager, Rachel Christie has lived in York for 16 years and brings almost two decades of experience to the role. She says: “We are so pleased to be able to help local people in Yorkshire regain excellent vision, and independence to live life to the full.”
“Cataract is a very common condition affecting many adults over 65, though we are also seeing more and more cases in younger patients.
“Symptoms include cloudy vision, noticing glare from lights (especially when driving), and faded colours. If people notice these changes in their vision they should book an eye test with their local optician. Sadly we are seeing patients with very severe cases, due to the waiting lists.”
