York City finally back on the right path

By Your Local Link Staff Writer Sammi Minion

Now well into the second month of Neal Ardley’s tenure, York City F.C are finally beginning to look like the kind of team supporters felt they’d been promised in pre-season. This turnaround in fortunes began with a landmark 3-0 victory over fellow-strugglers Southend United — earning York their first three points of the season. The result kick-started a run that’s seen the Minstermen lose only once in the last five games. They’ve picked up enough points along the way to sit comfortably in 17th place with a solid six-point buffer from the bottom of the table.

Last month Ardley told me that his vital first steps were to ‘get some structure in place — [to] show the players how to pick up some points.’ He’s done exactly that, instilling a win-at-all-costs mentality in the squad. The impact of those words were brilliantly summarised in the dying moments of the 2-1 victory over Dagenham & Redbridge. When awarded a free-kick in the 98th minute, Dan Batty opted to completely wallop the ball all the way out of the stadium, rather than even consider playing it forward to extend City’s lead.

While the weeks ahead pose serious challenges, including the visit of local rivals Halifax Town, York City look — at least for now — to be back on track.
