First of all happy new year to all of you who are reading this. Until recently, it felt like this would have been a good season to feel excited about the direction that the club was headed in. Having a stable manager, who, we thought would have kept us safe in the National League, continuing into 2023 with keeping our ambitions of returning to the football league a real reality and hoping that new owners would bring in a new dawn of life to our club.
Of course, this is York City, and this was never going to be allowed to happen! Since we last spoke, John Askey, has been sacked which felt like the biggest, backstabbing moment for City faithful. Here was a manager who made miracles happen, alongside Kingsley James, and made every single one of us believe again. He made us proud of this team and built a culture among his players and fans of believing anything was possible. He loved this club and loved the job he’d started here and so did we, as fans.
In my time following football, never have I seen a manager be so well supported by a fanbase. The way that the new chairman and the supporters’ Trust, (a group that supposedly represents the fans) have disregarded the opinion of their fans, and as a result lost all faith and respect that they had managed to build with us all again in recent times.
As always with football, we have to move on but we won’t forget what has gone on. The appointment of the inexperienced, David Webb as the new manager will mean he will have a lot to do to win over the fans and hope that results happen, and they happen quickly. As much as it’s not his fault and what happened with John Askey has nothing to do with him, he now has a job to do to turn things around, bringing results and proving the fans wrong. On paper, his CV is impressive having worked at some big clubs with some great managers but not in a coaching capacity and more in the scouting and recruitment areas which he has a good record. His assistant, Michael Morton comes with some good experience, but both will have to learn quickly that the National League won’t be a walk in the park and we, as fans, will need to get behind them. Overall, this could be a big and exciting appointment, and he may turn out to be a great forward-thinking manager, who will take us to the next level. I hope it does, but there is a time that we were sold this dream before under a certain previous manager, Jackie MacNamara, and two straight relegations then followed…
Here’s hoping that it does turn out to be a prosperous year and that we can push on in the National League and continue to challenge. As long as relegation isn’t threatened I think we’ll all be happy! Here’s hoping all of our teams across York have an incredible and successful year ahead.
