Three key streets in York are due a makeover over the next two months.
City of York Council is completely repaving and resurfacing the footpaths on the full length of Stonegate and stretches of Colliergate and Church Street.
Stonegate starts on 3 January for up to nine weeks, Colliergate on 3 January for up to seven weeks and Church Street from 21 February for up to nine weeks.
Over the years, the council has replaced damaged footway or worn paving stones as required, but as part of its annual footways renewals programme, is investing around £350,000 to fully renew the entire length of Stonegate as well as sections of Colliergate and Church Street.
For the first time in a generation, the council repaved the entire stretch of Stonegate’s carriageway in 2020.
Feedback was also taken on board from retailers and businesses, and works will stop before the Easter holidays start, and, if needs be, the council will come back to fully complete the schemes after Easter.
Cllr Andy D’Agorne, Executive Member for Transport, said: “Stonegate, Colliergate and Church Street are steeped in history. Stonegate was one of the first paved roads in York, which was a direct route to transport the Minster stone whilst it was being built.
“These are some of the most loved streets in our city centre so this investment will ensure these routes keep their special character whilst being more resilient to heavy use.”
Closure Dates:
Stonegate 3 January 9 weeks
Colliergate 3 January 7 weeks
Church street 21 February 9 weeks
