York’s much-loved Ice Trail returns on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd February 2025, transforming the city into a glittering winter wonderland. Organised by Make It York, this annual free event invites families, residents, and visitors to explore over 30 spectacular ice sculptures and discover York’s unique history through this year’s theme: “Origins.”

What’s On?

Get ready for an unmissable weekend celebrating everything that makes York special. Wander through the city streets and marvel at intricately carved sculptures showcasing 2,000 years of York’s incredible history. Highlights include:

  • Live Ice Carving Demonstrations at St. Sampson’s Square, where you can watch talented artists bring their creations to life before your eyes.
  • Themed sculptures, like ‘The Sweeter Side of Life’ at Middletons Hotel, paying tribute to York’s confectionery heritage, and York BID’s prehistoric creatures, celebrating York’s distant past.

This family-friendly event is completely free, making it a perfect way to spend a winter weekend with loved ones. Wrap up warm, grab a hot chocolate from one of York’s many independent cafes, and let the trail lead you through the heart of this historic city.
