YORK HOSPITAL RADIO: Tuned in to the city for over 40 years

York Hospital Radio has been transmitting loud and clear since 1964! This vital registered charity provides soothing sounds via a voluntary radio service, which has been tuned into by patients, visitors and staff at York Hospital for more than 40 years…

Anyone who’s spent time as an inpatient or regular visitor in hospitals will likely understand just how comforting a radio service can be, especially for those who are feeling lonely, unwell, and isolated from their everyday lives – what a difference the right piece of music (or simply a friendly voice) can make!

Broadcasting around the clock, seven days a week, York Hospital Radio provides a wealth of free-to-hear content, including music, chat, interviews, news, Outside Broadcasts, and regular, reliable live coverage of York City home matches. The team broadcasts from a range of well-known and iconic locations in and around the city, such as York Minster, Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York Theatre Royal, LNER Community Stadium and York Barbican. Although the service is primarily aimed at, and provided to patients and visitors at the Wiggington Road site (and, more generally, the city’s health and wellbeing community), you don’t have to be in hospital to dial in – you can also enjoy the service via DAB Digital Radio, mobile app, smart speaker, or via the YHR website.

This crucial local charity service is wholly supported and kept on air by fundraising, whether that be via donations from organisations and generous sponsors, or regular events such as bingo nights, supermarket events, car washes, gigs, city collections, special Outside Broadcasts, and the annual quiz night hosted by Alan Dedicoat. York-based nighttime revellers of a certain age may also remember cutting shapes to York Hospital Radio’s fundraising mobile disco, which started its life at the infamous former Willow restaurant in Coney Street. This much-loved mobile disco was managed and run by volunteer broadcaster (and former Chairman) Keith Lea, who celebrated his 60th anniversary at YHR in July this year, with a marathon 6-hour show to commemorate the occasion – you can still catch him presenting his weekly show from 10am on Saturday mornings. Keep it up, Keith!
