York Fashion Week 2020

It may not be New York Fashion Week, but it is definitely heading that way!

York Fashion Week launched in 2018 and has grown rapidly since then. Now in its third year, YFW promises to be its ‘Biggest event yet’.

Taking place from the 20th March until the 27th March, it will be an eight-day extravaganza of fun, fashion and freedom. 

YFW’s website states that this year you can expect ‘Real people’ and ‘Amazing new venues’ – which I’m sure York isn’t short of. This city is jam-packed with gorgeous, historical and unique buildings that would make incredible venues for fashion shows. 

The exciting array of venues isn’t where the excitement ends; the line up for the week is looking extremely interesting.

Ethical Fashion

To start with, a must-see at YFW has got to be the Ethical Fashion show, a collection made by local designers who are striving to improve the ethical issues in the fashion industry. At just £18, this event is not one to be missed, especially when it includes a glass of wine (or non-alcoholic drink, of course). 

The materials used for these designs are all ethically sourced, as the name suggests, such as locally grown flax and hemp as well as fibres such as bamboo and nettle. Also, the catwalk will feature jewellery crafted from beach-combing discoveries, found on the North Yorkshire Coast. 

The Ethical Fashion show is taking place from 6.30pm-8.30pm on Thursday 26th March at Hotel du Vin, 89 The Mount, YO24 1AX. 

A Night at Mansion House

Next up, a more pricey event, but equally as interesting: A Night at Mansion House. At £32, you would expect an extra something included… and they do not disappoint. Your ticket price includes canapés and a welcome drink – which is most likely a fancy G & T from Cooper King Gin Distillery, as they are serving drinks all night. Gin, canapés and fashion… what more could you want?

York Mansion House is a beautiful Georgian-style building which will be a great venue for a fashion show. This event features Berry’s Jewellery and the debut range from Thimbelina Bridal, which will create an elaborate evening of elegance.

A Night at Mansion House is from 7pm-9pm on Saturday 21st March at York Mansion House, St. Helen’s Square, YO1 9QL. 

‘Til Death Do Us Part

All the way from New York, Janie Tongue (Director of ’Til Death Do Us Part) is adding a gothic twist to YFW. Inspired by Tim Burton, combining gothic with elegance, Janie collaborated with Bridal Reloved in York, and together they decided on an alternative Bridal Show. 

This show will be very theatrical and diverse, appealing to not only the bridal crowd, but also people interested in alternative fashion. This event is a must see if you love unique fashion or are up for an evening of spooky brides and grooms strutting the catwalk. 

’Til Death Do Us Part is £15, from 7pm-9pm on Tuesday 24th March at Carluccio’s, 3 St Helen’s Square, YO1 8QN. 

Styling Secrets. Food, Boutique, Brunch & Bubbles
24/03/20

Another event with food and drink included (Yes!), and for a decent price at that: £27 for brunch, bubbles and a stylish runway show. This event is hosted by Copper & White and The Yorkshire Handbag Company, in the beautiful Dean Court Hotel. 

You can delve into your bespoke brunch and bubbles whilst the brands reveal their styling secrets and tips. This will be a lovely afternoon, and a good time to get a group of friends or family together. 

Styling Secrets takes place 12pm-3pm on Tuesday 24th March at Dean Court Hotel, Duncombe Place, YO1 7EF. 

Heroes

At just £10, including a reception drink, this event is up there with the more affordable ones. Heroes, is a David Bowie inspired show, created by Andy Boocock who has built an exciting network of designers. 

Similar to ’Til Death Do Us Part, Heroes is an alternative show that features ‘show-stopping’ designs. Andy has not only made an impact on the fashion world, he is also a model and a friend of YFW. 

Heroes is on from 7pm-9pm on Friday 27th March at Revolution, Coney Street, YO1 9NA. 

SVRN Design Showcase
23/03/20

Now for a different one, the SVRN Design Showcase, an event showcasing Stef Nelson’s designs. Stef Nelson is a tenacious student in York who is eager and ready to show her collection. Her designs are an example of ethical fashion, which will consist of her current bridal work as well as her new venture: SVRN. 

A free event located in the Merchant Taylors’ Hall, a historical building, this show is not one to be missed. 

Catch Stef 6pm-8pm on Monday 23rd March at Merchant Taylor’s Hall, YO1 7BX.
