The end of last month saw World Bee Day and to honour these wonderful things, we thought we’d tell you a few fun facts about why these little creatures are quite literally the bees-knees:
- Did you know that pollinators, such as bees, are responsible for one out of every three mouthfuls of the food that we eat?
- As well as their many quirks, bees are also little divas. Bees communicate with one another by ‘dancing’ to find food.
- In 2017, it was discovered that bees use scent markers, which are essentially like smelly footprints, to distinguish between a stranger, a relative, or their own scent.
- Queen bees are selected by a hive. They choose a young larva and feed it a milk-like substance called ‘royal jelly’. This will eventually help the queen bee to develop its fertility.
- And finally, ahead of this summer, if you see a bee struggling to fly in the heat, you can help to revive these little guys by mixing a little bit of white sugar and water on a teaspoon and feeding it gently to the bee.
