WE TRIED: WALKING WITH THE WANDERER

As one of the most-read, best-loved columns in Your Local Link magazine, Walking With The Wanderer is always a good shout for those seeking out a stroll in and around the York area – this month, we thought we’d try out the Wanderer’s latest route for ourselves!

We began our 6¾-mile walk in the idyllic village of Hovingham, which is nestled on the edge of the Howardian Hills. Leaving the village via a peaceful bridleway, we were quickly met with some sweeping views over the rolling fields and pastoral countryside landscape.

The route led us into a wood following the path which wound into a crossroads, where we followed it deeper into the trees, soon finding a little stream and a small sunlit meadow, hidden in the middle of the woods.

After leaving the woods behind us, we soon entered the pretty village of Slingsby, then continued on through some fields to the small village of Fryton. Here, we were greeted by some friendly locals as we passed through, heading onwards towards Hovigham once again. The final stretch of the walk took us through freshly baled fields and paddocks, where horses grazed in the sunshine.

After finishing our walk, we headed over to the Hovingham Bakery by the Brookside stream, where we enjoyed a slice of cake in the sunshine – the perfect ending to a countryside stroll!
