It’s nearing the end of the summer, so you may be looking after the pennies following expensive holidays over the last couple of months. Although that obviously limits what you can do, it shouldn’t prevent you from having a great day or night out. For those of you that are into sport, you’re especially in luck – as we’re discussing three sports you can attend in York, free of charge.
Cricket

After England won the World Cup earlier this summer, beating New Zealand in the final, the cricket buzz is on a real high in the country at the moment. Yorkshire also hosted the thrilling Third Ashes Test, where Ben Stokes produced the most incredible match-winning innings to keep his side’s hopes alive of regaining the urn. If you enjoy cricket, watching the sport under the sun, regardless of the level, is an undoubtedly enjoyable experience.
Yorkshire has a number of local village teams, all of which open their doors for free and really welcome supporters coming to watch and cheering on the players. Heworth, Ovington, and Woodhouse Grange are always a good shout on a hot summer day. The only thing which isn’t certain in York, of course, is the weather, so do take an umbrella along just in case the heavens do open and play has to be suspended.
Darts
The York Open Darts league continues in September where some of the finest players in the country will be competing for their respective clubs. Many of the PDC’s best darts players all started at this level, including former world champion Rob Cross, who is the 7/1 second-favourite in the darts betting to regain his crown at the 2020 World Darts Championship.
Watching darts at your local club or pub gives you a great chance to get close to the action and really appreciate how impressive these players are. If you visit your local club’s website, you can check out their calendar as they also have singles and doubles competitions throughout the year. If you fancy having a go yourself, some are open entry so you may even win some prize money if you are pretty handy at the oche.
Snooker

York has a rich history with snooker, as fans of the sport will know that the UK Championship is held at Barbican Centre every year in December and was won by Ronnie O’Sullivan in 2018.
You don’t have to wait until then to watch some high-class action on the green baize though, as the York Conservative Clubs Snooker and Billiards League, run by the Faber Shield committee, concludes in September. You will be very surprised by the standard of these players, some of which are semi-professional. This is obviously another indoor sport so even if the weather is atrocious outside, it will not stop you from enjoying the action on the snooker table.
Remember to check all the details on venues, admission, and timings before you travel to ensure you get the best out of your day out in York. With all this in mind, why not try something new this summer?
