Theatre review: Cruel Intentions at Grand Opera House York

FIVE STARS

By Mim Holmes

Having watched ‘Cruel Intentions’ (the 1999 movie) back in the 90s, I had some pretty high expectations, so believe me when I tell you that the show really captures the film very well.

From the start, it’s packed full of sexual innuendos — with all raunchiness and all the cheese you would expect from a High School set back in the 1990s. It made me reminisce on the days before social media, when house phones were still a thing, and to express your feelings to someone you actually had to go to the effort of putting a pen to paper!

The show is based on two cruel siblings that love the luxury life (their idea of luxury seems to be full of sex, drugs and seduction). Sebastian (Will Callan) is a rich boy with the worst reputation for ruining women’s lives. He is set the challenge of seducing the head master’s daughter Annette (Abbie Budden) by his cruel Step Sister Kathryn (Nic Myers).

It is a story of betrayal and lust — and a bit of awkwardness too — all played out through a bitter sibling rivalry.

Anyone that got in the way of Kathryn payed the price! This included Cecile (Lucy Carter), an innocent young girl who gets entangled in the games of Kathryn and Seb. Cecil is quite a quirky young lady with enough innocence for Kathryn to try and destroy her through her brother Seb. Cecile had me laughing throughout the show. Lucy Carter played the role very well.

The show isn’t as serious as sounded, it is highly entertaining with plenty of 90s pop music thrown in by the like of Britney Spears, TLC, NSYNC and many more…. The music certainly added to the comedy value with the characters bursting abruptly into song.

Cruel Intentions is an absolute cheesy, camp 90s show— it’s a great night out that you will seriously love.
