A few years ago, we nearly cut short a family holiday in north Wales. The campervan we hired didn’t suit everyone, the weather wasn’t great, and it all felt like hard work. We talked it though as a family, acknowledged everyone’s feelings and struggles and decided to give it one more day. Something shifted in all of us, and the next day we had a great time exploring a castle and had the bonus of the sun coming out too! We stayed till the end of the week and had a lovely time.
Holidays can be stressful and need to be carefully thought through.
Here is some friendly advice to help you make the most of your summer holiday!
Pre-Holiday Preparation
1. Pack Smart: Make a checklist a week before you travel. Pack over a couple of days to avoid the last-minute rush. Just pack the essentials. Think back to your last holiday, what did you over/under pack.
2. Involve the Kids: If appropriate, get the kids to help with packing. Give them a bag or case, so you can control the amount they pack! It teaches them responsibility and can reduce your workload.
3. Pre-Trip Fun: Build interest with a countdown, and let the kids research fun facts about your destination. This keeps them engaged and reduces any pre-trip anxiety.
Harmony on Holiday
1. Personal Space: Just because you’re on a family holiday doesn’t mean you need to be glued together 24/7. Encourage some alone time; bring books, headphones, or tablets for a bit of personal downtime.
2. Balance Activities: Mix child-friendly activities with things you enjoy. Let everyone pick a couple of activities for the trip. This way, everyone feels included and you’re not just following what the kids’ want to do. Remember it’s your holiday too!
3. Go with the Flow: If plans come undone, be flexible and keep a sense of humour. Showing your kids how to make the best of it, is a useful lesson. These situations often turn into the best stories later on.
4. Stay Active: Plan in plenty of physical activities, so the kids can burn-off energy. Having adventures and exploring new places can be a great way to bond as a family.
5. Communication is Key: If things aren’t working for you, talk to your partner about how you’re feeling. Tell them if you need a break. Work together and support each other.
Summer holidays can be a time to create lasting memories. With a bit of planning and a lot of patience, you can make this time enjoyable for everyone—including yourself!
Happy holidays!
