There’s a new scouting section for 4-5-year-olds, and it’s got an adorable name: Squirrels.
Like all scouting groups, Squirrels helps young people gain skills for life – with a focus on the outdoors.
Here in York, the team hopes to open four or five Squirrels Dreys in the district over the next few months.
Squirrels met for the first time in Acomb and Holgate in September. Holgate Squirrels’ reactions included: “I love, love, love squirrels!” (Isla), “I don’t want to go to school, I want to go to Squirrels!” (Jake).
Marek Lichtarowicz, Group Chair of Holgate, said: “I am delighted that, through Squirrels, we are now able to offer the joys, adventures and skills for life that Scouting offers, to even more younger children. We are very aware of the importance of engaging with children as early as possible to provide them with the best life chances.”
“At 1st Holgate, we are very lucky to have found leaders and helpers to enable us to open two new Dreys. However, I am sure, once the word of the fun of Squirrels is out we will find ourselves needing to recruit more leaders and helpers to help us meet the demand. In the meantime, we are smiling with the joy and excitement that our newest members of our Scouting family bring.”
Squirrels will need adult volunteers to come forward to help run the groups in future. If you’re interested in helping out, visit eborscouts.org.uk/become-a-volunteer to find out more.
