Rookscroft & Co: a fairytale wonderland in the heart of York

Many of us remember those beloved fables from all of our childhoods—stories filled with talking animals, grand adventures, and heartwarming lessons. For me, these memories were always fondly centred around the dear The Wind in The Willows series my nana introduced me to when I was little.

For years on end I could still recall the charm of those woodland creatures, gathering together for delightful tea parties with treacle cakes, biscuits, and scones whilst getting in mischief all the while!

Those timeless stories became a part of me, and in fact, I still hold them very close with me even today! Yet, growing up, storytelling took a big shift. Living in the early 2000s, I’m pretty sure my fellow Gen Z peers will remember how Disney’s output left its fairy-flavour behind, turning instead to narratives that discussed issues like school and social media.

With this, a shift in children’s literature also occurred. Books like Dork Diaries and Tom Gates seemed to sweep the market and take the world by storm.

Sure, I did still really enjoy the amusing anecdotes in these tales, yet nothing quite compared to those silly little woodland creatures I once called friends living deep in the heart of magical forests.

So, imagine my surprise and excitement, when as a first-year university student here in York, I stumbled upon a hidden gem that seemed to bring those long lost childhood stories to life—Rookscroft and Co.

Inspired by a childhood in the Midlands countryside, Jayne Siroshton has created the little village of Rookscroft as a direct call back to nostalgia ridden fables, centred around a buzzingly-rich animal world where its inhabitants function just as we do!

Putting it simply, Rookscroft and Co is a unique, independent store that immerses visitors in a magical world where the line between fiction and reality blurs. Whether you’re a fan of classic tales or just someone who enjoys whimsical adventures, this charming shop is sure to captivate any lost senses of childlike wonder and imagination. From the intricately designed miniature mouse houses of such wonderful chitter and chatter over tiny cups of tea and cakes, to the remarkable life-like statues of beloved characters, Rookscroft and Co offers a delightful blend of art, nostalgia, and creativity.

Getting up to all sorts of mischief and whacky whims of fancy, I remember browsing the stories in the store in such a childish glee.

Alongside this, the store carries a variety of merchandise, from character-themed shirts, bags, and prints to actual copies of the beloved books themselves.

It’s easy to lose track of time wandering through such an enchanting space, discovering treasures that will make you feel as though you’ve stepped straight into a storybook world – perhaps you want to join Little Eddie by the Bay with a sea urchin bowl of chowder or have Elsie tell you your fortune through her tea leaves!

These are just two of the many many more journeys you can take in the wonderful world of Rookscroft and Co!

What makes Rookscroft and Co even more special is its welcoming atmosphere—perfect for families with young children who will be entranced by the magical creatures and whimsical décor.

It’s also a wonderful destination for anyone who appreciates the power of storytelling and the rich legacy of modern fiction.

If you’re a lover of fantasy, fairy tales, or simply long for a touch of that nostalgic magic, I highly recommend visiting Rookscroft and Co. Whether you’re looking to find a special gift, take a trip down memory lane, or immerse yourself in a world of enchantment, this charming store offers something for everyone.

So, why not take a stroll on down to Rookscroft and Co and make some new furry friends? You never know what fantastical adventures could await you!
