On an unexpectedly blustery rain-swept evening, we were lucky enough to be warmly welcomed into Rosa’s Thai; located where Coney Street meets St Helen’s Square, to try out their mouthwatering Bangkok-inspired cuisine.
Upon arrival, two polite members of staff quickly showed us to our seats, an early tea meant we had the pick of the place! Our table was positioned right next to the window, with a view facing out to St Helens Square – A people watcher’s paradise!
Before I can even get onto the flavours that we experienced, I have to mention the fascinating array of original architectural features that I managed to observe during our meal (and on the way to the toilet!). Stone columns supporting centuries-old oak timber beams, wooden interlaced floorboards, stripped-back brickworks – building frames which have seen numerous tenants in their lifetimes. These stunning features are tastefully blended in with the contemporary decor, the wooden panel walling reminded me of a bamboo forest which is a very subtle touch. The flowers and greenery of the plants, along with the upbeat ambient music made a stark contrast to the lashing rain outside.
Once we have digested our surroundings it’s time to browse over the menu. Firstly wow, what a difficult choice choosing was! The menu has a wide range of different style dishes to choose from and they include your more traditional curry-based dishes, salads, soups and wok dishes plus much more – Rosa’s have got your favourites covered.
To start we opted for the classic sharing platter for two people, mainly because we couldn’t agree on 2 starters to share since there was so much to choose from! This covered quite a few of the starters we wanted to try between us with the chicken satay and honey-marinated pork skewers being firm favourites of ours. Also to note the prawn crackers are the tastiest we have ever tasted, delicious and packed full of flavour!
For our main dishes, we chose beef massaman curry and chicken jungle curry both with a side of steamed Thai jasmine rice. To really allow ourselves to indulge in the full culinary experience we decided to share these between the 2 of us. First up we shared the Jungle curry and wow what a punch of Thai spice and flavour! This was a coconut-free dish and had a very nice warming chilli kick to the dish so if you like a bit of spice then this is one to try. It was a nice change from the Thai food we had previously tried in the past as they were quite often coconut based.
Second up we shared the beef massaman curry, a very well-known and popular Thai dish but a top favourite of ours. Again this choice did not disappoint! The beef was cooked to perfection, melting in the mouth and the sauce was packed full of flavour. I would even go as far as to say that this is probably the best massaman curry I have ever tasted!
To go alongside our food we decided to try out one of the new summer special cocktails and for this, we picked the boozy lemongrass & pandan iced tea. What a flavour combo this was! Taking a sip and closing your eyes you are instantly transported across the globe to the beaches of Thailand. It was a very light and refreshing drink and was the perfect match for our meal.
From start to finish the meal and attention to detail were faultless and we already have plans to return with friends so we can try the dishes we didn’t get a chance to try.
