York is home to some wonderful green spaces, many of which are cared for by volunteers from the local community. This summer, it was announced that four parks in the city were granted Green Flag awards, an internationally recognised quality mark (famous spaces to have scooped the award include Victoria Park in London and Roundhay Park in Leeds). If you’re looking to enjoy a day out in York this month, why not check out these award-winning parks, right on your doorstep?
Rowntree Park, YO23 1JQ.
One of the city’s best-loved green spaces – home to an ornamental lake (popular with swans, geese, ducks and model boaters alike), a skate park, six tennis courts, a basketball court, table tennis tables, children’s play areas and the Reading Café.
West Bank Park, YO24 4JB.
Situated in Holgate, this popular 20-acre park features two children’s play areas, two bowling greens, a basketball court and a meadow picnic area – it’s also beloved for its picturesque rose terraces and pergola walk!
Glen Gardens, YO31 7YB.
Located on Heworth’s main street, this lesser-known green space is one for those in the know! This traditional park includes two tennis courts, a basketball court, free bike racks, a bowling green, and beautiful rose gardens to behold.
Clarence Gardens, YO31 8NS.
These small public gardens are located opposite York Hospital, providing peace and serenity amidst the bustle of Clarence Street and Haxby Road. Enjoy a formal and traditional garden setting (rose beds and benches aplenty) along with a newly refurbished children’s play area – no bikes allowed!
