York Theatre Royal is celebrating 275 years in the business, by throwing its doors for a weekend of family fun.
From Friday 9 to Sunday 11 August the theatre will be packed with tours, exhibitions, taster sessions and feasts – and the promise of ‘one big party’.
There will be free 30-minute guided tours of the theatre when people can enter the hidden backstage world, discover the secrets of the Grade II listed building and unlock more about its fascinating history which dates back to the 18th century.
The tours are free and can be booked in advance. Booking is advisable.
Also planned is a spine-tingling Digital Ghost Hunt exploring behind the scenes of the spooky goings on at York Theatre Royal over the centuries. It will be lead by renowned actor and ghost geek Julian Fitzmaurice who will give a friendly and frightful experience for all…Will the Grey Lady and the Dandy be revealed as ghost-hunters stalk the creepy corridors?
Tickets £5 for over 16s and free for under 16s (suitable for 8+). Booking is advisable.
De Grey Rooms will be transformed for the birthday weekend and house a costume exhibition showcasing the amazing array of outfits from the Costume Department. Staff from Costume Hire will be on hand to tell the stories behind the costumes with a rare chance to see clothing and accessories from the theatre’s story of precious items.
This free exhibition will be open from 11am to 4pm Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 August.
Nobody will go hungry during the birthday celebrations as well. A BBQ on the patio will offer an array of foods such as lamb and chicken shawarma as well as grilled halloumi, all served with pittas, tabbouleh, hummus and much more! The café will also be selling a range of tasty sweet treats for those with a sweet-tooth.
The Birthday BBQ will be open on Saturday 10th August, 11am to 6.30pm and Sunday 11th August 11am to 4pm.
There will be many other Events taking place over the weekend including a unique taster session with York Theatre Royal Choir, Photograph viewings from the theatres volunteer Photography Group over the Foyer screens and a celebratory cake and crafts sale from The Friends of York Theatre Royal.
