North Yorkshire family raises vital funds for national young suicide charity

On the 25th of August, Scarborough-based father and daughter, Brian and Claire will leave City Square in Leeds to walk the White Rose Way in a bid to raise money for PAPYRUS, the national charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide.

Undertaking a monumental 106-mile walk passing through Wetherby, York, Malton, Thornton-le Dale and Scarborough harbour, the pair will be trekking fifteen miles a day and will be joined by other family members along the way, who are helping with the fundraising.

Brian comments, “Supporting PAPYRUS is very important to me as the issue of suicide has affected members of my family, and has alerted me to the ever-increasing problems faced by young people in society today.”

Current staggering statistics reveal that suicide is the biggest killer of young people with over 1,600 lives taken each year across the UK alone – a large proportion of which, are shockingly school children and university students.

Speaking of their fundraising efforts, Brian continues, “Claire and I felt that this was one way in which we could contribute to the valuable work that PAPYRUS does. I’m really looking forward to raising money for PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide.”

Ran by trained professionals, PAPYRUS HOPELINEUK confidential helpline offers a text, telephone and email service, providing practical advice and support to young people with thoughts of suicide. The national charity itself also delivers regional programmes, training and campaigns to provide a platform for change.
