GOOD NEWS: A brolly good idea

York Minster’s beautiful brollies are now back in stock.

They were designed by 83-year-old photography enthusiast, Barney Sharratt.
Barney would usually be out and about taking photographs, but due the pandemic and needing to shield, he had to get creative with existing photos that he had already taken during lockdown.
Whilst reflecting an image he’d already taken of York Minster’s Rose Window onto a soap bubble, it reminded Barney of an umbrella and the idea started to form.
Wondering if his idea could become more than a daydream, Barney organised a sample of the image on an umbrella.
Barney was so chuffed with how the umbrella came out, that he put the idea to Neil Sanderson of The York Minster Fund to sell the umbrellas.
Barney said: “ Neil took up the idea with enthusiasm and the Rose Window Umbrellas are now selling well both online and at the Minster Shop.
The Minster folk have kindly taken over the project completely and personally, I have no financial involvement whatsoever. Which means that every penny of profit goes to the York Minster Fund.”
Barney reckons the umbrellas make a great gift for people who might usually be hard to buy for.

The umbrellas are priced at £14.99 and are on sale at shop.yorkminster.org.
