LOCAL CHARITY OF THE MONTH: HOME-START YORK

This month, we’re proud to introduce Home-Start York, a local charity that helps families with young children to meet and beat the challenges of parenthood. Since being initially founded as a voluntary organisation back in 1988, Home-Start York has developed significantly, and remains dedicated to standing beside and supporting parents navigating the intense, joyful and often challenging early years of family life.

The charity’s approach could not be simpler, enabling trained volunteers to step into the homes of families in need each week, offering companionship, practical help relating to raising a family, and a friendly listening ear for any new parents or carers in need of a chat. Despite the simplicity of the services offered, Home-Start York’s impact cannot be underestimated. By supporting parents with at least one child under the age of five, the charity has proven success in strengthening family relationships, boosting confidence, and helping parents of all ages to build the skills and foundations needed to foster lasting change, security, and happiness.

With early intervention remaining at the heart of its mission for more than two decades, Home-Start York offers structured groups for parents of newborns to 2-year-olds, the ‘Big Hopes Big Futures’ school-readiness programme, and emotional support for women in their final trimester, all of which reflect its commitment to ensuring that every child in York has the best possible start in life. The organisation recognises that parenting can be overwhelming, especially when compounded by isolation, depression, illness or disability. It provides a confidential, discreet, and non-judgemental service that has consistently fostered positive outcomes for local children and parents.

During December last year, the charity supported Good Morning Britain’s 1 Million Minutes campaign to help those experiencing loneliness by asking members of the public to pledge their time to charities looking for volunteers. As we enter 2026, Home-Start York is on the lookout for more volunteers in York to step forward and make a real difference to the wellbeing of local families. As more families reach out for support, the need for compassionate, reliable volunteers has never been greater. By offering just a few hours of their time each week, volunteers can offer vital emotional and practical guidance to parents facing challenges, helping to build stronger, more connected communities in the process.
