Local charity announces the opening of a brand new Cancer-therapy centre

York Against Cancer’s brand-new cancer support centre, The Leveson Centre, which after years of dedication is now open!

Brought to life by generous donations and community efforts, the centre is the perfect space for local cancer patients and their loved ones to begin their journey from diagnosis to recovery.

It’s a space not only for patients themselves but also for their friends and families to receive advice in an intimate environment- most sessions are limited to a maximum of only six people. York Against Cancer has worked hard for nearly four decades to make what can be an extremely challenging process easier for patients and the new centre has taken the shape of a central hub for all those efforts. To make getting started even easier, York Against Cancer are offering 6 FREE sessions of complementary therapy.

These sessions include time with an on-site occupational therapist or meetings with Rebecca, a clinical psychologist who works closely alongside her adorable support dog Luna. Once patients are into the flow of things at the new Centre they’re invited to get involved in a wider brochure of treatments including aromatherapy, hypnotherapy, reflexology, reiki and more!

For those days in which visitors are just looking for advice in a more casual setting, the charity want patients to feel welcome to pop in for a cuppa in a safe, friendly but non-clinical environment. The holistic nature of the support options makes the centre the perfect complement to the formal care patients receive from York hospital.

Fuelled by weekly coffee mornings every Wednesday from 10-12:30am and a Friends and Family Support Group one Thursday per month, the community has grown exponentially, with over 1,300 people walking through the doors since opening.  The meetings have helped foster great discussions between those with similar experiences over well-being tips and financial advice.

The Leveson Centre is a touching tribute to one of the charity’s founders, Professor Steve Leveson, a retired Consultant Surgeon who helped set up the YAC 36 years ago. He is renowned for his genuine compassion and has touched the lives of thousands of people across North and East Yorkshire, it is only fitting that all those who set foot in and receive care at the centre know his name, without whom York Against Cancer would not exist.
