A Yorkshire artist is raising funds to support wildlife conservation in one of Britain’s remotest territories.
So far, Robert E Fuller has raised £1,650 for the South Georgia Heritage Trust, which works to conserve penguins, seals, albatrosses, and more, on the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia, a small British overseas territory 1,500km southeast of the Falkland Islands.
The total sum, raised through auctions and a raffle, is expected to increase as an exhibition featuring penguin related art and film at the artist’s North Yorkshire gallery continues.
“I’d like to do what I can to support the amazing work the South Georgia Heritage Trust does to conserve Antarctic wildlife,” said Mr Fuller.
“South Georgia is one of the most remarkable places I have ever visited, and the South Georgia Heritage Trust does vital work to conserve the native wildlife there, and the island’s fascinating cultural heritage, in what is a very challenging environment.
“Whilst I was there, I visited the South Georgia Museum and met the people who work there and learned about the work they do there. It inspired me to want to do what I can to help.”
The Trust and its partner Friends of South Georgia Island help to support wildlife projects such as research and education to reduce the decline in South Georgia’s wonderful breeding albatrosses and to protect whales.
Alison Neil, CEO of the South Georgia Heritage Trust said: “South Georgia is described as the ‘Serengeti of the Southern Ocean’ due to its incredible abundance of wildlife.
The island was also once at the epicentre of the whaling industry, but thankfully is now a world-renowned conservation success story.
We are delighted that Robert is supporting our ongoing conservation work to protect this beautiful island’s precious wildlife and cultural heritage.”
Robert Fuller raised £1,450 during two separate auctions to win penguin art prints whilst aboard a cruise to the region in November.
He then went on to raise a further £200 through sales of raffle tickets at his gallery in Yorkshire.
The winning ticket will win the artist’s popular penguin painting, ‘We Three Kings’ (pictured above)
