Goldsborough Hall opens its gardens for a special summer opening in support of the National Garden Scheme, offering visitors the chance to explore the grounds at their July best. At this time of year, the gardens are rich with colour, texture and seasonal interest.
Highlights include the Rose Garden, planted with old rose varieties such as Old China Blush, Little White Pet and Comte de Chambord, interplanted with Lavandula angustifolia ‘Old English’ and edged with lavender ‘Munstead’. The historic beech hedges date back to Princess Mary’s time, while the central sundial was a gift to her from the people of Horton, Oxfordshire.
The impressive 120ft herbaceous borders, planted in a Gertrude Jekyll style in 2006, feature ever-lasting sweet peas, irises, helianthus, rudbeckia and dahlias. Elsewhere in the grounds, visitors can admire magnificent mature trees, including a giant redwood, a rare sorbus, a pseudo-acacia from the 1750s and one of the oldest surviving horse chestnuts in the country. No visit is complete without a walk along the quarter-mile Lime Tree Walk, planted by royalty in the 1920s.
Hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and scones will be available to purchase on the day. Free garden talks by the Head Gardener take place at 12.00pm and 2.00pm, with a plant stall also available on the terrace.
